Chinese New Year Reunion Hosts By Zuan Yuan Chinese Restaurant At One World Hotel Petaling Jaya

 Dear Readers,

Happy Reunion At Zuan Yuan Chinese Restaurant One World Hotel Petaling Jaya Starting From 19th January 2022 - 28th February 2022

Similarly to the Christmas celebration, this is the second year after the pandemic which most of us have been separated from our family during the festive season. To be honest, I am looking forward to going home to celebrate the auspicious Lunar New Year together with family and friends in my hometown.

Reunion Dinner is one of the important meals of the entire year that is prepared on New Year's eve where all the family members will get together to celebrate and enjoy the meal. The best part of this meal is all the dishes are prepared with the best meaning and symbols. For example, fish (Yu) dish is a must as it represents "Nian Nian You Yu" with the meaning of prosperity and abundance through the year.

This is the tradition that has been kept for many generations and it is still practiced by the Chinese community in this modern year. Recently, I just got the opportunity to try out the Chinese New Year Reunion set introduced by Zuan Yuan Chinese Restaurant during my staycation at One World Hotel Petaling Jaya.

One World Hotel Petaling Jaya is proudly home to one of the best Cantonese restaurants available in town. Special this year to celebrate the auspicious Lunar New Year, Chef Tommy Choong Chan Hoo, the Executive Chinese Chef of Zuan Yuan Chinese Restaurant has curated a suite of set dinners that are perfect for reunions with your family and friends.

During my visit, we started our Happy Reunion lunch with Yee Sang with Lobster Meat, Black Truffle and Shredded Crystal Pear. To me, it is unique as this is my very first time having lobster meat and black truffle Yee Sang set. After tossing the Yee Sang, I hope that all of us will be blessed with abundance, prosperity and vigor for the entire Year of Tiger.

Next on the list is the Braised Dried Scallop Soup with Eight Treasures, Dried Seafood and Sea Moss, followed by the Roasted Duck served with Pineapple, Mango, Cucumber and Rojak Sauce. Since fish is a must, we had the Steamed Cod Fish with Yun Mushroom, Red Date and Bean Curd (available only in CNY a la carte menu).

Symbolizing happiness (Ha Ha Siu = Prawn), Wok Fried Fresh Water Prawn with Supreme Butter Sauce served in Claypot is next on the list. The freshwater prawn is so fresh, big in size and very sweet yet juicy.

Abalone is also one of the must-have ingredients especially in this lovely reunion meal, whenever it is possible as this is one of the premium and pricey ingredients. We had the Braised Abalone with Sea Cucumber, Dried Oyster and Garden Greens

Another unique twist in this Happy Reunion that I had is the Wok Fried "Shanghai" Rice Cake with Assorted Seafood and Chef's Seasonal Sauce instead of serving fried rice.

As a dessert to complete our meal with something sweet so that we will have a year-long happy ending, we had the Double Boiled Red Dates, Lemongrass and Ginger Tea with Glutinous Rice Ball and Steamed Traditional "Nian Gao" with Shredded Coconut

About Executive Chinese Chef - Tommy Choong Chan Hoo

Executive Chinese Chef Tommy Choong Chan Hoo of One World Hotel's Zuan Yuan Chinese Restaurant has a star-studded resume and brings over his conspicuous passion for cooking, together with 20 years of expertise in Chinese cuisine.

This culinary wizard started as a kitchen hand when he was 19 at Regent Hotel Kuala Lumpur (Grand Millennium Hotel today). A thirst for adventure prompted him to seek new frontiers and he joined Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur - a job he held for the next 9 years, during which his love affair with the Cantonese cuisine began.

Over the following years, Choong chanced upon the opportunity to work with several prestigious hotels like Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur, Le Meridien Putrajaya and Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur which he helped give the Chinese restaurants international reputations.

With Cantonese fare being lighter in flavor than other regional cuisines, Choong's goal is to achieve what is referred to as "clarity" - seemingly simple dishes executed with skill and subtlety, to bring out the ingredients' natural flavors and textures. This makes the quality of ingredients critical to him, for even the most basic dishes!

Chef Choong's knowledge comes exclusively from hands-on experience and a love of food versus formal training. You'll spot him laughing in the kitchen or mingling around in the restaurant with his infectious smile as he stands by the Irish proverb "Laughter is brightest, where the food is served best".
